The Inaugural Chinese Herbal Medicine Business Matching Event Sparks Cross-Strait Cooperation

The "2015 Medicinal Herb Business Matching Conference," held for the first time in Taiwan, concluded on June 18. With active coordination from the Foreign Trade Association, 17 representative buyers from mainland China and Hong Kong were invited to Taiwan. The buyers indicated that the competitive products in the mainland market for negotiations included health products, functional beverages, Ganoderma lucidum, probiotics, natto, bitter melon, enzymes, and medicinal patches. The estimated on-site cooperation opportunities amounted to 5.52 million US dollars, with a projected follow-up procurement amount of approximately 23.57 million US dollars.

The buyers in this event included Hubei Jiuzhou Tong Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Co., Ltd., a joint venture between mainland China's largest private pharmaceutical enterprise Jiuzhou Tong Pharmaceutical Group and mainland China's largest health wine enterprise Jinpai Co., Ltd. Additionally, there was the Qilai Group in Hong Kong, which has over 40 branch stores and retail points in Hong Kong, including Watsons chain pharmacies, large PARKnSHOP supermarkets, and JUSCO department stores. Shandong Yanxitang Medicine Chain Co., Ltd. is one of the century-old brands in the Shandong pharmaceutical industry, with over 380 chain pharmacies and a turnover of 720 million RMB in 2014. It ranked second in the pharmaceutical chain industry in Shandong Province and 39th in the comprehensive competitiveness of pharmaceutical chains in mainland China.

Among the 25 Taiwanese companies that came to negotiate with the buyers were Mackay Memorial Hospital, Zheng Guang Pharmaceuticals, Jinfukang Biotechnology, and Huatuo Fuyuan Tang Pharmaceutical Technology, conducting over 90 one-on-one procurement negotiations.

The advantages of the Taiwanese herbal industry include: 1) being the world's largest market in terms of scale and maturity of concentrated herbal preparations; 2) strict quality control standards; 3) innovative research and development technology; 4) re-innovation of traditional preparation techniques; 5) excellent quality image of Taiwanese products. Having these advantages allows manufacturers to gain a competitive edge in promoting their products.

The Foreign Trade Association continues to assist in connecting Taiwanese and mainland Chinese herbal industry players, planning a series of promotional activities, including the "2014 China (Guangzhou) International Traditional Chinese Medicine Tablet and Precious Tonic Exhibition - Taiwan Medicinal Herb Image Pavilion" from May 25 to May 30 last year, and the "2014 Beijing Taiwan Famous Products Expo - Taiwan Medicinal Herb Image Pavilion" from November 13 to November 16. This year, they have planned the "2015 Guangxi (Nanning) Taiwan Famous Products Expo Medicinal Herb Image Pavilion" from May 29 to June 1, the "2015 Medicinal Herb Business Matching Conference" on June 18, and the "2015 Medicinal Herb Raw Material Supply Chain Group" in September.
