During the Academic Symposium on Traditional Chinese Medicinal Herbs in Kinmen held at the County Agricultural Experimental Station today, Dr. Ke Yuren, an adjunct assistant professor at China Medical University, pointed out that a certain type of root in Kinmen has functions such as pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects, but further research is needed.

The symposium was presided over by Huang Zhongqing, Chairman of the County Society for Medicinal Plants. Participants included Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine merchants from Kinmen, Taiwan, and mainland China's Anxi, Fujian.

Both master's and doctoral theses have focused on this particular Kinmen root, and Ke Yuren, who frequently conducts research on it in Kinmen, presented the preliminary research results on this root.

Ke Yuren stated that over ten years ago, when he conducted research on medicinal plant resources in Kinmen, he discovered that this particular root had already become a specialized economic crop and a unique industry in Kinmen. However, it was mixed with similar-looking foreign medicinal herbs. Moreover, there was almost no research data available on related components, pharmacology, and toxicology. This sparked his interest in this particular root, aiming to clarify the source of the medicinal material and differentiate its effectiveness and safety.

He mentioned that in the research framework, emphasis was placed on the Kinmen variety of Glycine and the traditional variety of Stephania. Preliminary research indicates that the Kinmen root has antioxidant properties, which can prevent arteriosclerosis. It also has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects without toxicity.

Zhengguang Pharmaceuticals has already introduced the Kinmen root and developed patches mixed with other traditional Chinese medicines, which are expected to be on the market next year.

The Kinmen root is an industry supported by the Kinmen County Government's Agricultural Experimental Station. Processing businesses such as tea bag and patch manufacturers collaborate with planting farmers. The main planting area is in Xiguo Mountain, covering about 10 hectares. After harvest, it is purchased at a guaranteed price by processing businesses. (1021005)
